The Mystical Path

Some of the greatest Saints of the Catholic Church led lives of spiritual aridity, and suffered great persecutions even from within their own families and Religious Orders. But even though their souls were immersed in the depths of darkness, where they were deprived of all consolations, yet they did not fall into despair.

For it is these souls who learned to love God for who He IS, rather than what He could give them. It is these privileged souls who held within their hearts, the Pearl of Great Price. They did not seek after the glitter or the glory of their encounter with the Divine. In fact most of these noble souls were silent about their struggles and inner aridity.

It is those who seek spiritual 'highs' who are in most danger of falling into despair, for it is not God they seek, but the 'feelings' of exultation through the manipulations of emotions, rather than their dependence on God. This hunger for spiritual 'highs' is a form of unhealthy spirituality, in that one can become addicted to the 'ecstasy' that a spiritual high can engender. This is a poor substitute for the true Mystic who is being called and wooed by God into a higher state.

But before the soul can reach this Mystical completeness with God, they must first be purified, which entails great spiritual and emotional suffering, as the ego is destroyed and in its place a pure love for God is born, for out of the ashes of the ego, the soul is reborn in Christ.

It is the soul who when invited into this Mystical unity, will find more thorns strewn on their path than rose petals. This calls for much perseverance from the individual to place their Trust in the Goodness of God, whilst they disregard their emotional clinging to the ego!

This is why the great Mystics of our Faith eschew any longing for 'feelings', in that they recognise that these 'feelings' will lead them astray, from the purpose of which God is drawing them into union with the Divine.

Neither do these great Mystics promote a cold 'attachment' in that a soul who is on fire for love of God is not cold towards others, but deeply humbled towards ALL. There is much misunderstanding in what detachment is: we are to become detached from a longing of 'things' but not to foster a coldness or chilliness towards anyone. Detachment is to appreciate that all things made by God is good but they do not become dependent upon the created, but, instead they remain dependent upon the Creator.

This teaches us that we are called to detach ourselves from 'longings' but not to detach ourselves from Love, for God cannot reside fully in a soul that has chilled out all love and holds itself aloof from others.

A true Mystic is not one who hungers for neither spiritual highs nor consolations; instead the person has a burning and zealous love for God, which cannot be quenched by outside forces. This is a person who recognizes their own unworthiness and their littleness, whilst embracing and acknowledging that it is God who is Great and not themselves!

God's Love is a fiery furnace which consumes the soul completely, without nullifying the uniqueness of the individual, for the Church has had many Mystics, but, no two have been the same, in that St. Catherine of Siena is not St. Therese of Lisieux, yet both are Mystics of the one Faith.

In order for God to work within the soul uninterrupted He first has to empty the soul of any egoism, emotionalism and attachments, the soul in effect becomes an empty vessel and it is then that God fills the empty vessel with the Essence of the Divine. This does not 'divinize' the person, but it does make them a living reflection of the Triune Spirit, indwelling within them.

In the end it is the Mystic who dies to self will, and arises with the spark of the Divine Love, which then spills itself out for love of others, so they can truly say 'I have been Crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me'!

Spirituality and Prayer

What Is the Difference

Spirituality is living in awareness of the constant Presence of God, and in that awareness one allows God to transform the soul into a reflection of The Divine. Whereas prayer is our relationship with God, it is our touchstone and also our lifeblood for without prayer, the soul will wither and die.

In order for relationships to thrive one has to learn to both listen and speak. So it is with God and the soul. For if our conversation with God subsists on a daily basis of a list of wants, then is that relationship or an effort to control God to suit our selfish needs?

Our spiritual awareness and maturity will define our relationship with God. For if we treat God as if He were there to fulfill all our wants and longings, as if He were our servant and we the masters, then that reveals the immaturity of the person, for God does not live to please us, but that we live to please God. For in the end God does not need us, we His children need Him, we should not love God based on what He can give us, but to love Him for who He is!

What relationship would last the distance if our only conversation was a list of demands and complaints of the demands not met! How could love thrive if the intent of the person is simply to manipulate another to do its will, rather than to simply appreciate and to be grateful for what it has received, without demanding more.

The relationship we have with God is dependent on our quality of prayer; our spiritual health is also measured by this same yardstick, for if prayer is non existent then the spiritual wellbeing of the person will be anorexic. If prayer is based on a grocery list of wants, then our spiritual wellbeing will be stunted by the immaturity of the person and its lack of reverence towards the Majesty of God. If our prayer becomes petulant because our wants have not been met, then we shall never rise above our selfish EGO, and the focus will be on the Self rather than on God.

For prayer is not about gaining, it IS about giving, but in order to give of ourselves, we must become spiritually dependent upon God, and allow Him free access to our souls in order for our spirit to become incorporated into the Divine. Thereby we become living reflections of the Son, whilst maintaining our own uniqueness as God created us to be.

Spiritual awareness, allows us to recognise that God is within us, that He dwells in the soul that loves Him and lives only to please Him by being obedient to His Commandments and the Truths of the Church. Prayer allows us to be strengthened by God and through God to be like God to all we meet. For if one cannot recognise the indwelling Spirit of God within the person, then what spirit rules that heart?

For the spiritually mature and for the soul who cultivates a healthy prayer life, will reflect the image of the Divine and speak of Gods Awesome Majesty and His Good works within the soul of the recipient. Their speech will reflect the burning zeal and reciprocal love of the child towards its Father in Heaven, and give God all honour and Praise for His Glory, whilst paying little heed to themselves. For it is these souls who recognise that God has done great things within them.

Whereas the spiritually immature will never be able to raise its spiritual eyes over and above themselves, therefore their speech will be solely based on themselves and their myopic prayer life will consist on manipulating God to their will and not the reverse. The most observant way to recognise this unhealthy spiritual existence, is when they lack peace of heart irrespective of their circumstances, and when the 'fruits' are not that of sincere love but of a love of self over and above their love or lack thereof for God!

If we long to be close to God, then it would behoove the soul to remember that God is only a prayer away, and if the soul wishes to be transformed into God's likeness, then they too like our Blessed Mother, need to give God their fiat, for our Heavenly Father will not infringe upon our free will!

In the end, in order to live healthy spiritual lives, we need to live in an awareness of God's Presence and through this awareness, we then incorporate prayer into our daily existence, not because we wish to gain, but, in order for us to give and to give till it costs, as did our Lord and Saviour.

Mysticism An Introduction

What Is Mysticism

There have been many Great Mystics in The Catholic Church, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Catherine of Sienna, Francis of Assisi to name but a few.
But what exactly is Mysticism?
A mystic is someone who feels a longing for God, a great thirst within their souls which cannot be quenched. It is not a case of looking for God, but of God touching the soul with the spark of The Divine, which then ignites a holocaust within the soul of the recipient. This does not mean that one's soul is annihilated but that the EGO is annihilated, for God does not kill the soul but consumes the soul in the purifying furnace of His Love.
It is a dark journey that God invites the soul, where a blanket of immense blackness envelops the soul. As all light disappears the soul feels itself abandoned by its one true love, God. It is a searing of the intellect in that all worldly consolations are removed. As God readies the soul for Himself and to make a home within the person, it is the wooing of the Divine to His beloved. Therefore the person is no longer interested in the superficial, nor can it be appeased by the artificial, for once the soul has been ignited by the Divine, all else pales and there is no substitute.
This is a painful and at times an excruciating experience for those who are called to a higher degree of perfection, than most. Often times, the person mistakes this call as a punishment or a chastisement, and in confusion the person returns to the consolations of the world. This does not make God love the soul less, but it does reveal that it is the person in question who is lacking in spiritual maturity and also in trust.
It is a Divine call which few can endure, for it seeks to purify the soul without destroying it, to embrace the uniqueness of the individual without crushing it, to extinguish the element of self love and replace it with the Divine. And even though a person cannot enter nor become divinized, a spark of the Divine Love which penetrates to the depths of the soul will purify it from all worldly love, in order for the soul to be in the Presence of the Triune Spirit, which seeks to inhabit the soul of the loved by The Beloved.
In effect it is an intimate touch of The Creator to the created, the Divine Spark which when felt in all its Purity and intensity will change the person forever, and from which there is no cure nor is a cure sought. As the deer panteth after the water so the soul thirsts for God with a longing that only God Himself can appease.
